U.S. President Donald Trump vowed on Monday (August 24) to impose higher tariffs on Canadian automobiles, auto parts, and steel starting next January, just days after trade talks between the two nations collapsed.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated that tariffs on these products would rise to 50%. He remarked, “Canada has been ripping off the U.S. for years.”
Trump said, “Made in the USA means zero tariffs. No more treating Canada like a state!” He cited what he described as “ridiculously high tariffs” imposed by Canada on U.S. agricultural products.
Canada is the United States’ second-largest trading partner, followed closely by Mexico.
On Saturday, the U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, including furniture, dairy products, clothing, and hockey equipment.
Canada responded by announcing that it would impose its own tariffs on U.S. products of equal value starting September 8.
